A Classic Play,
Mary Lincoln Biography and Tale of an Autistic Teen
are the Focus of January Library Book Groups
It’s a chance to again study that high school classic, “The Crucible” as well as the adventures of an autistic teen at the four different monthly book groups sponsored by the Naperville Public Library in January.

Pageturners, an adult book group that primarily reads non-fiction, meets the second Tuesday of each month. In January, they will read “Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography” by Jean H. Baker. This is a complex account of the former First Lady’s troubled life. The group will discuss “Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography” on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. Kathy Carrus is the facilitator.

New Horizons Book Discussion Group, an adult book group, meets the third Thursday of each month. They will read “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” by Mark Haddon on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. Despite his fear of interacting with people, Christopher, a mathematically-gifted, autistic 15-year-old boy, investigates the murder of a neighbor's dog, uncovers secret information about his mother, and takes a train ride to London. Julie Phend facilitates this group.

Another adult book group, From Cover to Cover, meets the third Thursday of each month. In January they will read “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. Based on historical people and real events, Miller’s play uses the destructive power of social sanctioned violence unleashed by the rumors of witchcraft as a powerful parable about McCarthyism. The meeting will be on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m., in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

“The Inferno” by Dante is the featured reading of the Great Books Reading and Discussion Group. This adult book group follows the Great Books discussion format and meets the third Tuesday of each month. They will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Program Room, Naper Boulevard Library, 2035 S. Naper Blvd. Jack Hatfield is the facilitator. This group is sponsored in memory of Mary (Daphne) Dragula by her family and friends.
