Attention Alums of the Naperville Public Library Trustees
The Naperville Public Library is creating an alumni group of former members of the Naperville Public Library Board of Trustees. This informal organization will help the current Library Board and staff learn more about Naperville’s needs and concerns regarding Library services. Alumni will also hear about major Library issues and concerns, helping the Library communicate with the community.

The initial meeting of the alumni group will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the Nichols Library. Anyone who has served on the Naperville Public Library Board of Trustees is invited to attend.

Kids – Come to the Library and Go Bananas!!!!
Swing on over to the Library and let’s hang out together as we GO BANANAS for monkeys with a bunch of stories and songs; and even a craft. There’ll be lots of Monkey Business to do for me and you!! This program is for children of all ages and their caregivers, no registration is required.

Returning to the Library! – The Popular Black Light Theatre
Join us for this magical illuminated program – the Black Light Theatre. During this performance stories will be told in a darkened room using black lights and glow-in-the-dark puppets and props. The event is recommended for ages 3 and older and children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. No registration required for this program.

A “Scandalous Relationship”,
Historical Thriller and a Glimpse of How the Brain Processes Images
are November Book Groups Focus
A fictionalized account of the scandalous relationship between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney, the true story of Nome, Alaska’s terrible diphtheria epidemic and an examination of how someone who is blind learns to see again will all be discussed by the Naperville Public Library’s book clubs in November.

Pageturners, an adult book group that primarily reads non-fiction, meets the second Tuesday of each month. In November, they will read “Crashing Through” by Robert Kurson. Blinded in a childhood accident, Michael May, at the age of 46, undergoes surgery that restored his vision. Kurson shows how May adjusts to this medical miracle as well as how the brain processes visual images. The group will discuss “Crashing Through” on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. Kathy Carrus is the facilitator.

“A Simple Heart” by Gustav Flaubert is the featured reading of the Great Books Reading and Discussion Group. This adult book group follows the Great Books discussion format and meets the third Tuesday of each month. They will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Program Room, Naper Boulevard Library, 2035 S. Naper Blvd. Jack Hatfield is the facilitator. This group is sponsored in memory of Mary (Daphne) Dragula by her family and friends.

New Horizons Book Discussion Group, an adult book group, meets the third Thursday of each month. They will discuss “The Cruelest Miles” by Gay Salisbury on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. The true story of the 1925 Nome, Alaska, diphtheria epidemic describes the hopeless plight of the patients, with a blizzard brewing and the much-needed serum 700 miles away, as teams of sled dogs and their drivers become the only hope for survival. Julie Phend facilitates this group.

Another adult book group, From Cover to Cover, meets the third Thursday of each month. In November they will read “Loving Frank” by Nancy Horan. This is a fictionalized account of the scandalous relationship between architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his lover Mamah Cheney. The meeting will be on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m., in the Children’s Storyroom, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

Travel Overland from Victoria Falls to Zanzibar with Bill Helmuth and Eyewitness to Africa
Explore the exciting and mysterious heart of Africa with our favorite explorer Bill Helmuth. The audience will travel with Bill over 3,000 bumpy miles in a safari vehicle, while remaining in the comfort of the Library! The program will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

Some of the sights seen will include the grandeur of Victoria Falls, tribal villages and rural schools, and the island of Zanzibar. Not just a travelogue, Bill takes you into the heart and soul of the people, and how the repercussions of colonialism still pose problems for today’s struggling governments.

Hands-On Class on Tracing Your Family History
Get step-by-step instructions in how to trace your family history using the Naperville Public Library’s online resources. Federal census records, obituaries and death notices, passenger lists, and many other sources will be featured. This class is free, and participants will have a chance to practice in class! “Trace Your Family History”, a hands-on course, is offered Saturday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m. Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

Hometown Holidays – Library Style
What a way to celebrate the holidays – with hot chocolate, comedy, magic, and juggling! Join the Naperville Public Library as we celebrate Naperville’s Hometown Holidays with hot beverages and an outstanding performance by A Truly Remarkable Loon.

Come to the Nichols Library Rest and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or spiced cider. The free beverages will be served Friday (Nov. 28) from 4 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday (Nov. 29) from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday (Nov. 30) from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, enjoy a performance by A.Truly Remarkable Loon. Loon can balance anything and everything! Just watch him juggle balls, sports equipment and Harry Potter’s Nimbus 2000, just to name a few! And while he’s doing that, he’s cracking the audience up with other wacky antics and jokes. You just have to come to the show to truly appreciate how very remarkable this loon really is!

Loon will perform twice on Saturday, November 29 at both 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library. This program is suitable for all ages and no registration or tickets are required. Seating is limited to 180. This program is in partnership with the Downtown Naperville Alliance and no registration required.

Images of Honest Abe with Art Excursions
See a variety of depictions in this slide show honoring Abraham Lincoln. Images of our 16th president changed dramatically during the course of his political career. Even after his assassination, he continued to be a popular source for artwork and material culture. This program on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. examines paintings, photographs and sculptures relating to Lincoln in their proper historical context. Art historian Jeff Mishur, a member of the Illinois Humanities Council’s Road Scholars program, will present this lecture.

Best-selling Financial Columnist Discusses Saving for Retirement

The Naperville Community Associates
 of the Art Institute of Chicago
Why is the lure of literature so powerful a subject for visual artists? In this lecture, Dr. Margaret F. Farr, Lecturer, Department of Museum Education, The Art Institute of Chicago will examine two different ways painters may demonstrate the link between art and literature. Her talk, “The Pleasure of the Text -- Reading Pictures, “ will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave., Coffee will be served at 7 p.m.

Her lecture will include scenes taken from literature, while other art works portray subjects immersed in the art of reading. She’ll consider what drives each type of image and the consequent effects of those “reading” such works.

Original Works of Fiction and Poetry to Debut Nov. 8
Come listen to original selections of fiction and poetry by Naperville authors at the debut of newest edition of Rivulets, the annual literary magazine of the Naperville Writers Group. The public is invited to attend this exciting and highly entertaining program to be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

The Naperville Writers Group that formed in 1988 is comprised of authors of varied interests and abilities from the western suburbs. Many members are published authors; others are beginners. They come together to share information, ideas, and opinions; to trade information about writing opportunities; and above all, to react to one another’s writing in constructive ways.

Anyone interested in writing and meeting with other writers is invited to the Rivulets’ debut to get a taste of the group’s offerings.

“At Long Last” with Singer Tony Andriacchi
Tony Andriacchi, hailed as one of Chicago’s greatest vocal treasures, performs music from his latest CD, “At Long Last” on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Meeting Room A/B, 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Dr.

Andriacchi has performed at Ravinia, Davenport’s, the Pump Room and the Drake Hotel. His warm and subtle style brings new meaning to the great American Songbook. Often compared to Tony Bennett, he will perform classics such as “At Long Last Love”, “Sway”, “Maybe September”, and “This Guy’s In Love with You”.

Seminar on Stress-Free Financial and Estate Planning
Celebrate Financial Planning Week by learning about the benefits of financial and estate planning. The seminar will take place on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., Nichols Library, Community Room, 200 W. Jefferson Ave. No registration is required for this program.

Co-leaders are Donald Duncan, a financial planner at D3 Financial Counselors and Chairman of the Illinois Financial Planning Association, and attorney William J. Strons of the Huck Bouma law firm. Mr. Strons is an expert in personal and estate planning, including the drafting of wills and trusts.
