Applying to college has always been a stressful process for students. On top of choosing where to apply, filling out endless applications, and writing the perfect essay, students must face the dreaded entrance exams. The mention of three little initials is enough to send any high school student running in the opposite direction, but the Naperville Public Library has numerous resources available to ease your nerves and help you prepare for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.
You may want to rethink any plans to cram the night before your exam. In addition to studying hard, the College Board recommends that you “become familiar and comfortable with the test format and question types.” To help with this, NPL has many available books on studying for entrance exams. The Official SAT Study Guide and The Real ACT Prep Guide are the two official books published by the makers of each respective test. Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron’s (among others) offer books to help you prepare for the ACT, SAT, and most AP tests as well. Some of the more popular titles are listed below. Our collection also includes amended editions of classic novels – such as War of the Worlds and Wuthering Heights – that identify and define SAT vocabulary words.
Beyond the Books
NPL also subscribes to LearningExpress Library – an online resource that offers practice tests, courses, skill improvement programs, and more. LearningExpress Library can instantly score practice tests, give answer explanations, and help you improve your essay-writing skills.
Additionally, both ACT and the College Board offer free practice questions and helpful test-taking tips on their websites (http://www.actstudent.org/ and http://www.collegeboard.org/, respectively), as well as online courses. Another online source is Peterson’s, which offers test prep, in addition to other application resources.
