There is a lot of excitement with this time of the year.  Sometimes the waiting for the big day can be overwhelming.  Baking can alleviate some of the pre holiday anxiousness.  One great activity is baking and decorating a gingerbread house.   A finished creation can either be enjoyed as a decoration or can be devoured by family and friends. Gingerbread HouseI am of the decoration kind.  Our family began decorating a gingerbread house each Thanksgiving as a fun activity for the kids.  We would enjoy the spicy scent and visual appeal of the house all season long. Then on New Years Day, the boys would take small wooden toy hammers and as a celebration of out with the old in with the new, our sons would smash the now very brittle house into tiny pieces while we captured the event on video.

Making a gingerbread house doesn't have to be a laborious task, you can buy a pre-baked kit at most craft and hobby stores or you can simply glue graham crackers to a box or milk carton.   If you prefer to bake your own you can use a store bought mix to speed up the process as I do.  You need to leave yourself a few days to complete the task.  One day for baking, then the houses harden over night after baking.  Day two you put the pieces together with icing "glue" and again let the building harden overnight and on day three it's ready to decorate.

Be sure to use small and colorful candies or if you are a real artist an all icing home can be beautiful.

This year at Naperville Public Library we will be having a Gingerbread House Contest at all three buildings on Saturday, December 15, 2012.  We would love to have you share your creation with us that morning as we display your creation along with others for many visitors to enjoy.  Don't worry, we ask that you take your creation back home with you for your family to enjoy after the viewing hours are over.  Drop off time is from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m..  The public display hours are 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m..
