You have just finished a fantastic novel. The first in a series. You cannot wait to read the next one, only, you do not know which title comes next. You are so excited for the next book that you do not want to waste any time scouring the internet for series order.

Scan me with your smartphone! If this quandary sounds familiar to you, Naperville Public Library has the solution. The Library has begun labeling fiction series with QR codes. This includes the hardcover, paperback, and book-on-CD versions of each title in a series. In addition to a QR code, each label has the series title and placement number of that particular title within the series (for users without smartphone access).

The QR code links to Fantastic Fiction, a website providing up-to-date series lists, book information, publication details, and authorScan me with your smartphone! information. When the QR code on a book is scanned, readers will be taken to a listing of all of the books in the series to which the book in their hands belongs. They will then be able to determine which book to read next. If a book is a crossover novel between two series, both series will appear on the label. When readers finish a series, they can still use the QR code to browse other books by that author.

As the Naperville Public Library continues to add these labels to our Adult and Young Adult collections, we hope to make library visits more efficient and convenient for our users. Whether users are placing a hold at home or browsing in the stacks, they will quickly be able to see where a book falls in a series, so they can get back to the continuing exploits of their favorite characters.
