Wonder what we're reading here at Naperville Public Library?  Come on in and ask us!  We're always happy to provide reading suggestions based on your interests or ours - whatever you're looking for.  Whether you love fiction or non-fiction, romance or Booker Prize winners, we've read (just about) everything!

Or, if your armchair's a little too comfy to part with at the moment, you can also browse around Readers Corner on our Web site.  There you'll find our monthly Staff Favorites, or personalized book reviews from individual staff members.  These selections run the gamut from bestsellers to fringe publications; from new releases to oldies-but-goodies.  Check back every month for a fresh list!

Our November 2013 list is available now, and I'll throw in a few more for the fun of it (synopses from our catalog and NoveList).

  1. Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield Bellman & Black(Sarah V.)
Killing a bird with his slingshot as a boy, William Bellman grows up a wealthy family man unaware of how his act of childhood cruelty will have terrible consequences until a wrenching tragedy compels him to enter into a macabre bargain with a stranger in black.
  2. Longbourn by Jo Baker Longbourn(Kathleen L.)
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants' hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.
  3. The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri Lowland(Diana R.)
Brothers Subhash and Udayan Mitra pursue vastly different lives--Udayan in rebellion-torn Calcutta, Subhash in a quiet corner of America--until a shattering tragedy compels Subhash to return to India, where he endeavors to heal family wounds.
  4. The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan Valley of Amazement(Ruth K.)
Violet Minturn, a half-Chinese/half-American courtesan who deals in seduction and illusion in Shanghai, struggles to find her place in the world, while her mother, Lucia, tries to make sense of the choices she has made and the men who have shaped her.
