According to a recent article by Catherine Rampell, a New York Times online blogger, the average length of the interview process has nearly doubled from 12 days in 2009 to 23 days in 2013. She takes these statistics from analysis done by Glassdoor, a website that measures the interviewing activity of its followers. Because of continuing economic uncertainty, employers are being extremely cautious about whom they hire, bringing in large numbers of candidates for interview after interview. (The Endless Interview Process article.)
With so many rounds of interviewing, the key question may be how to be well prepared for a third or fourth or even fifth interview?
One of Naperville Public Library’s online resources, Brainfuse JobNow! features a live interview coaching service. A job seeker can connect with an expert career coach in a chat session to brush up on interviewing skills in an online mock interview. The service is available between 2:00 and 11:00 p.m. every day of the week. The website also offers 24/7 access to interviewing tips, common interview questions, and links to internet resources about job interviewing. These services are free when accessed through the library's online resources webpage.
Frequently, the most successful job candidate is the one who demonstrates intimate knowledge of an employer’s opportunities and challenges. A number of the library’s online resources provide in-depth company and industry information for job seekers, including Business Insights, Business Source Complete, Lexis-Nexis and Plunkett Research Online. In a three-part video series, Jack Plunkett, founder of Plunkett Research Online, provides his “7 Keys to Employment Research.” One of his main ideas is that people in the job market can perform much better in a job interview by preparing beforehand by accessing material and information found in the Plunkett Online Research Centers and other similar resources. To use the videos, log into Plunkett Research Online. From the top of the home page, click on the Job Seeker Resources & Tools icon, then click the video icon.
Another helpful resource is the series of job search workshops available at Naperville Public Library. On May 20, 2014, Becky Brillon of Naperville’s Community Career Center will present a free workshop on developing and enhancing interviewing skills at the Nichols Library Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Attendance is open to all interested parties and no registration is required.
