Students entering 1st through 5th grades can spend time reading aloud with an older student. This non-tutoring program is intended to provide students an opportunity to spend enjoyable time reading aloud with a student volunteer. Students will be paired with a volunteer entering 6th through 12th grades and spend the one-hour session taking turns reading aloud. Depending on attendance, participants may be placed in a group.

Introduction To The Silhouette Cameo Cutting Machine (95th)

Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 2:00 PM -- 95th Street Library
This class will demonstrate how to use the Silhouette Cameo cutting machine. This may look like a normal at home printer but instead of using ink to print an image, it uses a marker to draw or small blade to cut designs into paper, cardstock or vinyl. Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 6 participants.

Understanding Common Core (95th)

New Common Core guidelines and objectives, as well as changes in standardized testing, has been fully implemented in the 2014-15 academic year for all grade levels. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) testing will also begin starting in the 2015-16 academic year. Learn how the new Common Core state and national standards along with new PARCC testing may affect the learning outcomes and goals that are expected of students in the classroom.

Arduino workshops: Arduino 101 (NSL)

Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 6:30 PM -- 95th Street Library
This class will discuss basic electronics components and create some simple circuits using Arduino. No prior electronics or programming experience is required. *Program requires advanced registration.

Lego Mindstorms Battle Bots (95th)

Friday, July 31, 2015 at 3:00 PM -- 95th Street Library
Teens will compete in teams to build and program Mindstorms EV3 and NXT 2.0 robots that are prepared for battle. The bots will then duke it out in the arena and attempt to push their opponent out of the ring. The last robot standing will be declared the winner.

Family storytime (NSL)

Saturday, August 01, 2015 at 10:30 AM -- 95th Street Library
This 30-minute program of stories, songs and more fun activities is for children of all ages. In addition, strategies also will be presented to enhance early learning opportunities at home. At least one parent or adult caregiver is required to accompany children.

Twirling and tweeting robotics (95th)

This program will spark creativity as children can design and program robotic birds that sing and dance. Learners can utilize their critical thinking skills to build robots out of LEGOs and program them using WeDo software. Each group will be challenged to put their STEM skills to the test, redesigning their robots to react and move differently. This program is presented in partnership with Sylvan Learning of Naperville/Woodridge.
