Crafted with Care – Library Members Create 9 Afghans for Less Fortunate

Sometimes people’s generosity just blows you away.  That’s the case at the Naperville Public Library when Sandy Peto and her team viewed the 9 large patchwork afghans Naperville Public Library members created. The quilts were the result of the program, Pay It Forward: Knitting and Crocheting Afghan Squares.

“I was just hoping our Pay It Forward program would make 1 or 2 afghans.  I couldn’t believe the energy and time people devoted to this project,” Sandy, a Nichols Library Adult Services staff member, said.

The project started in September when Sandy and her team of NPL staff members, Deanna Donovan, Judy Aulik and Yan Xu started holding monthly meetings to create 7 by 9 inch afghan square. They quickly found out that support was wide-spread. “We had a fairly even distribution of knitters and crocheters,” Sandy noted. Some were very experienced, some wanted a refresher, and we also had newcomers who just wanted to learn.”

Want to see the beautiful afghans created by these energetic folks?  They will be on display at the Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson St., through Sunday, Dec. 2. After that they will be donated to 360 Youth Services and Family Shelter Service.
