Superhero writing and drawing contest

Every hero has a story, and teens can write it. Teen writers can submit a written biography or a short story (1,500 words or less) as well as their own drawing of a superhero. Participants can include their superhero's name, where they live, their powers, their slogan and how they accomplish good in the world. The contest will begin June 1, and the deadline for entries is 9 p.m. Friday, July 31. Gift certificates to a local comic book store will be awarded to winners. Pick up an entry form at any Naperville Public Library location or look it up on the teen page of the library?'s website, www.naperville-lib.org.

YAY for YA!-An online goodreaads book club

Lovers of young adult literature can sign up for the library's online Goodreads book club. Each month, a new book will be selected, and readers can discuss it online through the participants' Goodreads account. Request to join the group "Yay for YA!: An Online Book Club" online at www.goodreads.com, or email teen librarian Alison Colman at acolman@naperville-lib.org. Sign up early to take a poll on what book selection the club should read first. The first book will be posted on June 1, and participants will have the entire month to read it and discuss.

Family Storytime (NIC)

This 30-minute program of stories, songs and more fun activities is for children of all ages. In addition, strategies also will be presented to enhance early learning opportunities at home. At least one parent or adult caregiver is required to accompany children.

The power of play (NBL)

Adult and child interactive play is critical to language development. Families can have fun and play with their children at stations that include manipulatives, board games and puzzles as well as items for imaginative play and gross motor activity.

Lego Mindstorms Battle Bots (95th)

Friday, July 31, 2015 at 3:00 PM -- 95th Street Library
Teens will compete in teams to build and program Mindstorms EV3 and NXT 2.0 robots that are prepared for battle. The bots will then duke it out in the arena and attempt to push their opponent out of the ring. The last robot standing will be declared the winner.

Students entering 1st through 5th grades can spend time reading aloud with an older student. This non-tutoring program is intended to provide students an opportunity to spend enjoyable time reading aloud with a student volunteer. Students will be paired with a volunteer entering 6th through 12th grades and spend the one-hour session taking turns reading aloud. Depending on attendance, participants may be placed in a group.
