Kids Events for the Month of August

Everyday Heroes Contest!

Saturday, August 01, 2015 at 9:00 AM -- All Libraries
Children can nominate someone who has been a hero in their life, giving them the recognition they deserve. In a short, one-page essay, children can share the reasons why their hero deserves to win and how they have made a difference in their life. Include at least one photo to accompany the nomination. The winner will receive a certificate of recognition, and they will be highlighted on the library?'s website and social media channels. Participants can drop their submissions off at any children?'s desk by July 15.

Family storytime (NSL)

Saturday, August 01, 2015 at 10:30 AM -- 95th Street Library
This 30-minute program of stories, songs and more fun activities is for children of all ages. In addition, strategies also will be presented to enhance early learning opportunities at home. At least one parent or adult caregiver is required to accompany children.

Sensory storytime (NIC)

Saturday, August 01, 2015 at 2:00 PM -- Nichols Library
The whole family is invited to a 30-minute program of books, songs and fun for children with special needs. All abilities are welcome with an adult caregiver. Inquire at any children's services desk for more information. The program will take place on the first Saturday of each month.

Twirling and tweeting robotics (95th)

Monday, August 03, 2015 at 1:30 PM -- 95th Street Library
This program will spark creativity as children can design and program robotic birds that sing and dance. Learners can utilize their critical thinking skills to build robots out of LEGOs and program them using WeDo software. Each group will be challenged to put their STEM skills to the test, redesigning their robots to react and move differently. This program is presented in partnership with Sylvan Learning of Naperville/Woodridge.

Drive-in-movie (NBL)

Monday, August 03, 2015 at 4:00 PM -- Naper Boulevard Library
Summer is the perfect time for a drive-in movie. Children will decorate their own cardboard box cars, then park in designated spaces in front of the screen to watch a short movie.

Book & Cookie club (NIC)

Monday, August 03, 2015 at 7:00 PM -- Nichols Library
Visit the library for a child-and-parent book discussion group. The child and parent/adult will read the selected book together and then attend the club's meeting to discuss it with others while enjoying a cookie or two. Each book will be chosen at the preceding meeting and listed on the library's website, The library will have multiple copies of each title available for checkout.

Evening on The Riverwalk (NIC)

Tuesday, August 04, 2015 at 7:00 PM -- Nichols Library
Staff will present this popular Riverwalk program, which will include stories, songs and a puppet show. Participants can bring a meal or snack. In the event of inclement weather, the program will take place in the Community Room of Nichols Library.

Video Creation For Kids (95th)

Wednesday, August 05, 2015 at 10:00 AM -- 95th Street Library
Budding filmmakers can make their own movies for fun with friends or for a school project. They can learn how to record and edit as well as add music, sound effects and titles to their movie clips using the Idea Lab's high-definition camcorder and editing software called iMovie. For students in 3rd through 5th grades. Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 12 participants.
