Notice Print All Around (Print Awareness)

Print awareness is noticing print everywhere, knowing how to handle books and knowing how we follow words on a page. Before children can learn to read, they must be familiar with how a book works. Books have a front and back cover. When reading English we begin at the top of the page and read from left to right. Children need to understand that print is meaningful in their daily lives and has many functions: directions to a friend's house, information, how to bake a cake, or an manual on how to play the latest video game.

What can you do to help your child become aware of print?

  • Get sturdy books for babies and toddlers so they can explore how books work.
  • Point out print in books or on signs.
  • Encourage drawing and scribbling.
  • Have your child help make the shopping list.
