Talk, Talk, Talk

Vocabulary is knowing the names of things, ideas, feelings and concepts. Vocabulary is an extremely important skill for children to have when they are learning to read.

  • Talk to your children-The more words children hear the larger their vocabularies.
  • Read to your children- Research shows that children who are read to have a larger vocabulary and better language skills when they start school. Even simple picture books are 3 times more likely to contain words not used in everyday conversation. Children who are exposed to lots of different words have an easier time learning to read and understanding what they have read because they have seen and heard the words before.

What can you do to help your child increase his or her vocabulary?

  • Talk to your child about stories and pictures in books
  • Read favorite stories again and again. Children learn and rememeber more by having books and words repeated.
